Description
A granite sphinx fragment bearing the name of the Hyksos ruler Khayan. This piece demonstrates how the foreign Hyksos rulers adopted and adapted Egyptian royal iconography to legitimize their rule.
About the Second Intermediate Period (Hyksos)
The Hyksos controlled the Delta from Avaris, while native Egyptian dynasties ruled from Thebes. Cultural exchange introduced the horse, chariot, and composite bow.
