Hanging Church of Cairo
Description
One of the oldest churches in Egypt, dating to the 3rd century CE. Suspended above the gatehouse of the Roman fortress of Babylon, its wooden roof is shaped like Noah's Ark. A masterpiece of Coptic architecture and art with intricate bone and ivory inlays.

Christianity transformed Egypt's religious landscape. Monasticism flourished, Coptic art developed its distinctive style, and the Hanging Church was built in Old Cairo.
